How to Export a GPX File from Garmin Connect
A step-by-step guide to downloading your Garmin activity as a GPX file, ready to use with Stamptivity for custom activity photo overlays.
Garmin Connect stores all your activity data and lets you export any workout as a GPX file. Once exported, you can drag the file into Stamptivity to create a custom stats overlay for your photos — with distance, pace, elevation, heart rate, and more.
What You'll Need
- A Garmin Connect account
- A GPS activity recorded with any Garmin device
- A desktop browser (Garmin Connect's web app is easiest for file exports)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Open Garmin Connect
Go to connect.garmin.com and sign in. Navigate to Activities in the left sidebar and select the activity you want to export.
2. Open the Activity Options
On the activity page, click the gear icon (⚙) or the three-dot menu (⋯) in the top-right corner of the activity. The exact icon depends on your browser and screen size.
3. Click "Export to GPX"
From the dropdown, select Export to GPX. Garmin Connect will generate the file and your browser will download it.
The file name usually follows the pattern: activity_1234567890.gpx or the name of your activity.
4. Upload to Stamptivity
Open Stamptivity and drop the .gpx file onto the upload zone, or click to browse. The app reads your data entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to any server.
Using the Garmin Connect Mobile App
The mobile app does not support direct GPX export. For mobile-only users, the workaround is:
- Visit connect.garmin.com in your mobile browser
- Request the desktop site (via browser settings)
- Follow the same steps above
Which Garmin Devices Work?
Any Garmin device that records GPS data will produce compatible GPX files — this includes Edge cycling computers, Forerunner watches, Fenix/Epix multisport watches, and older eTrex handhelds.
Tips
- Heart rate data from a Garmin HRM strap or optical sensor is included in the GPX export and will appear in Stamptivity's heart rate widget.
- Indoor activities (like treadmill runs or trainer rides) may lack GPS coordinates. Stats will still display, but the map widget will be unavailable.
- If you use Garmin Training Plans, the same export process applies to any completed workout.
Supported Activity Types
Stamptivity detects cycling, running, hiking, and walking from your Garmin GPX file automatically. The template and available stat widgets adjust to match your activity type.
